Belated Birthday Reveal!

Birthday Apron

While canning tomato sauce this year, the hubby was splattering sauce on his clothes so I suggested that he grab my apron. This was not eagerly received so for his birthday a couple of month's later, I made him his very own.

After scouring the internet for patterns, I took a deep breath, loosely followed this tutorial and mostly winged it. The apron itself is made with fabric from Robert Kaufman's Robot Factory line and is a circuit board layout! : ) The neck strap and ties I made from some kona cotton in snow.

The biggest trick was the sizing. I wanted this to be a surprise, so I snuck one of his dress shirts out of the closet and used a photo of him wearing it to count buttons down to his waist. For the overall length, I held it up to myself, found my knees and added about 6 inches. And I totally guessed as to the neck width. Happily when he tried it on, it fit *perfectly*. ^_^

Halloween 2012-Year of the Meme

As I mentioned, the hubby and I were invited to a costume party. A friend on facebook had considered (and rejected) nyan cat as her halloween costume, so I suggested it to hubby as an idea for his. He liked the idea and I had a pretty good plan for bringing it to life. After much pondering, I decided to stay on theme and go as my favorite meme of recent history.

Clean All The Things

I thought it turned out rather well.

Hello

The Hubby and His New Car

In my last post, I mentioned that we sold the Pontiac. As you might imagine, this wasn't some wild hair. In fact, it was step 2. Step 1 was purchasing a new Toyota Matrix. Nautical blue metallic. Blue tooth enabled. With the spoiler and body side moldings and (simply because it's what the dealer could find) tinted windows.

The hubby is over the moon about his new love and has busily gone to work geeking it out. The blue tooth means his car and his smartphone can have deep pseudo-intellectual conversations. My husband's ever inquiring mind means that he found and set up an ap that allows him to set conditional behavior. Specifically, he's set it up so that as soon as he enters his car, his phone syncs with the car and turns on Pandora. No set up time, no fiddling, just sit down and wham! music of choice. It's crazy fabulous. As is the rest of the car. And my husband : )

Anniversary the 6th / Anniversary the 10th

My husband and I dated for 4 years before we got married, nearly to the day. The awesome part of this? Easy math. The only downside? When we come up on our anniversary, people will inevitably ask what number. And I will inevitably mangle some version of "Six. Well, married for six, but together for 10, we dated for 4 years first..." At which point most people start looking at me like I have a second head.

But those four years matter. Those were the years when we built our relationship, learned who we were as a couple and who we were as individuals. We learned to fight fairly, to communicate.

All of which to say, last weekend we celebrated our anniversary. Our 6-years-married-10-years-together anniversary. It was lovely.

We kicked things off with an afternoon showing of Rock of Ages.

Taming the Paper Beast

Storage Ottamon

Before we moved into this house, I took it upon myself to tackle our files. I shreded and sorted and organized and filed like there was no tomorrow. And what emerged was a two drawer filing cabinet and one wood crate filled very neatly with a rainbow of hanging file folders. A few months later we moved and the hubby and I talked about buying a real filing cabinet. One which would hold all of our paperwork. Only...the hubby didn't really want to spend the money. So we waited. And while we waited all of our files have been going into "The Box". As you can imagine, 2.5 years of bank statements, bills, and other miscellaneous "important should file" stuff makes quite a stack and our little banker's box was overflowing. (This is clearly a problem because it disturbs the all important geological layering method of sorting.)

Love in the Kitchen

Buttermilk Biscuits

It's funny when people talk about how they met their significant others. They talk about bars and parties and websites. Churches, workplaces, and classes. But really, that's not the important part. My husband and I met in a class room. Technically, just outside of one, while picking up our quizzes from the week before. But where we fell in love? That was the kitchen.

Happy Birthday Hubby

Happy Hubby!

Today we celebrated my hubby's birthday. It was a laid back sort of day. One that started with sleeping in late and ended with quiet reading/laptoping. It was a day with some mundane tasks (picking up a prescription, putting gas in the car), some fun outings (we went to see Captain America and tried a new BBQ place for dinner) and lots of great conversation. It was also interspersed with presents every time he turned around. (I love being sneaky!) : D

And so in honor of his 29th birthday, 29 things I love about my hubby:

Surprise

Surprise Birthday!

The hubby's birthday is coming up next week. So when he told me that he wanted to have some friends over for a Labor Day BBQ, it didn't take me too long to connect the dots and start hatching a plan. I went through several potential ideas, each time realizing that they were (a)very time consuming and (b)might make his friends think I was a little half baked. So I kept stepping it back. Eventually, I messaged the guy he knows best of the bunch (they work together), and told him that the hubby's birthday was coming up so I was planning on surprising him with a cake. I figured at least that way no one would be taken by surprise (other than the hubby, of course).

Spring Sprucing

The House in Spring

I love our house this time of year. From March to the end of April we have Things That Bloom. Though certainly not due to our efforts, I still love to enjoy them. Angles like the one above make me feel like we live in some secluded garden.

And for a brief bit of time, even the side of the house gets it's turn in the spotlight.

The Overdue Cargo Net

Success!

A few years ago we purchased a car. A shiny blue little Corolla that was to be all mine. And over the last 3 years, oh how I've loved my little car. There was just one tiny little issue. The cargo net.

Homeowners 1 : Inclement Weather 0

My View

Last weekend the hubby and I took a somewhat impromptu three day weekend. It was scheduled to be spring (oh 80 degree weather, how I've missed you) and we were needing to give the house some love. You see, back in February, we had a really awe inspiring snow storm. It may or may not have been thunder snow, but it most certainly tried to invade our territory.

Snowmageddon 2011

Snowmaggedon 2011

The weather reports called for 4"-6" of snow. We thought that would be astounding. Then we got 7"-12" of thunder snow---and my first ever snow day!

Thankful

Thanksgiving Dinner

I hope all of you in the US had a wonderful Thanksgiving yesterday. The hubby and I slept in, putzed around on the computers, and finally got to cooking around noon thirty. Six hours and several sinkfuls of dishes later we had a table full of food and two very annoyed cats. (How dare we spend all day downstairs, what were we doing?) This was our first year making everything for scratch and with the exception of the botched gravy (turns out if you get distracted and burn your roux, even slightly, there is no saving it) everything was delicious.

And so, I'll take a moment today to be grateful.

  • For my husband, who is endlessly supportive, amazingly intelligent, and knows just how to make me laugh
  • For our kitties who are happiest when we spend all day at home cuddling
  • For our family and friends in California, who stay in touch even though we are now far away
  • For the local friends were are making
  • For all my online friends (including all of you!) who inform, educate, entertain, and commiserate with me
  • For a job which continually challenges me, allowing me to grow in my field
  • For a beautiful home in a city small enough to still touch nature
  • For creative outlets and the time and ability to pursue them

Flashback Friday # 9

Take a trip back in time with me every Friday. Continue your journey over at Christopher and Tia's.

Turtle Quilt

Once I picked up quilting, it took me about 2 nanoseconds to decide to make a quilt for my husband. We had gone shopping and he'd picked out fabrics in a variety of colors and then...it sat. I wasn't sure what pattern to use. At the time, I was working on my college campus in the engineering department. A couple of the women in the office also quilted and brought in quilting magazines for me to read. That's when I found "it", the pattern that was meant to be.

You see, my hubby grew up with out any pets (due to his parent's allergies) but when he was a very little boy he "adopted" a turtle that lived under a bush in their backyard. He was heartbroken when they had to move and the turtle couldn't come with them. That turtle was the inspiration for the pair of turtle pillows I made him and seeing this pattern, it was too much to resist.

Flashback Friday # 7

Take a trip back in time with me every Friday. Continue your journey over at Christopher and Tia's.

Rob and I Feb 2002

Today marks four years of marriage for my hubby and I, which means we have been together for (almost exactly) eight years. It doesn't seem so very long ago that we got our start but the things we've achieved together tell a different tale. We've finished our undergrad degrees, become Engineers in Training, moved to LA, got married, completed our masters (me in Product Development Engineering, him in Electrical Engineering), moved across the country, started work, adopted cats, bought a car, bought a house...and suddenly we're closer to 30 than 20. I don't quite know how it happened so fast, but I do know that we've had way more good times than bad. And as long as we have each other, there is nothing we can't do.

The photo above is the very first photo we ever took together. We had been dating only a week, and yes, it was film.

Skip Day

Today's skip day is brought to you by work! Too many things to do + too few hours to do them in = overtime.

However, I'm in a good mood and this one is at the computer next to mine. Being his amazing self. ^_^

The Kitty Litter Box of Awesome In 11 Steps

Step 1. Buy a house with an awesome kitty door into the garage (or install one)

Before

Step 2. Have fabulously creative husband (and mother) come up with the brilliant idea (or read about their amazing idea here).

Mom and Hubby

Step 3. Draw up a plan heavy on the cute, light on the details. Blog about it.

Grand Plan

Step 4. Purchase the litter box you want to use. Find scrap wood in the garage. (Or buy some. Ideally you would want 1/4" thick mdf.) Beg, borrow, or steal some form of saw, a drill, and some C clamps. (We used a jig saw, you could use a skill saw if you are feeling brave or a hand saw if you are feeling particularly patient.) Purchase beadboard. Pick out an awesome handle and latches for the sides. Buy a fair amount of wood glue (we used two of the regular sized bottles), plenty of small 1/8" long wood screws, a couple tubes of caulk, a caulking gun, primer, and paint. Save your receipt for a blog post like this. Promptly forget where you put it. Grumble that the cats will have the most expensive litter box in the city.

Step 5. Break out your handy dandy tape measure and measure where you want your boards to fit and how. If you have a yard stick, this is a great way to get relatively straight cuts. Remember to include the little things (like your door needs to be wide enough to cover the opening AND the two sides walls). Test fit your pieces as you go. We got fancy and match cut the wood to the molding on the walls. If this is too much, you can always build it flat and just butt it up against the wall, just make sure it is well secured.

Cutting and Marking

Step 6. Join your pieces. You could use pieces of wood and long nails but we used L brackets and corner braces. We had bunches of L brackets on hand and the corner braces were just easy peasy. If you are going into drywall, you will need drywall anchors to secure those screws so they can support the weight. Keep adding boards until you have the box built up. Now is the time to add a support if you feel you need one. We cobbled ours together of thin pieces of wood and more L brackets.

Framed Up

Step 7. Attach your beadboard to your door piece, attach hinges to box and then to door. You will want to drill the holes for your handle before you attach it, but don't install the handle yet, you need to paint!

Step 8. Attach your bead board using generous amounts of wood glue and screws. This will hide the drill holes from the anchor screws (if any) and make everything look beautiful and super finished. Clamp the beadboard in place while it dries so it will dry flat. Don't worry about any small gaps, you can fill that in with caulk later.

Side--In Progress

Step 9. Caulk to fill all the gaps, crevacies, uneveness against the wall, screw heads and random holes. Prime all unfinished wood. (Our beadboard came primed!) Paint everything.

Interior

Step 10. Attach latches to prevent kitty escape.

Right

Step 11. Attempt to teach cats to use kitty door and the new litter box.

It Was a Kitcheny Christmas Around Here

In addition to the stand mixer my parents bought us, I bought my lovely husband a space invaders cutting board. It is amazingly well made (handcrafted to the best meaning and fullest extent of that term) AND fun to look at. It's also generously sized and will be helpful for rolling out pie dough (my hubby is the pie maker in the family) along with just about anything else.

Space Invaders Take Over The Kitchen

I actually purchased this from Think Geek before discovering the artist's shop on Etsy.
