Bacon Wrapped Smokies (Aka "Meat Candy")

Meat Candy

When serving a meal of all appetizers, I like to make sure we have a few heartier things on the menu. Veggies and dip are amazing, but they do not a meal make. I found this recipe on All Recipes and was won over by the short ingredient list, simple prep, and rave reviews. We weren't disappointed.

Makes: ~2 dozen pieces

Ingredients
1 pound sliced bacon
14 oz package beef cocktail wieners
3/4 cup brown sugar

Directions
PREHEAT oven to 325F
LINE baking sheet with foil

SLICE bacon into thirds
WRAP a bacon pieces around a cocktail wiener
SECURE with a toothpick

REPEAT until all wieners are wrapped
ARRANGE on baking sheet
SPRINKLE with brown sugar

BAKE for 50 minutes
BROIL for 5 minutes

Enjoy!

My Thoughts
1. Line your pan with lots and lots and lots of foil. I did one layer and the drippings/sugar combination got under it and...completely defeated the "easy cleanup" purpose of the foil. Oops. I would suggest at least two layers, one running lengthwise and one running widthwise.

2. These things are DELICIOUS. Healthy? Probably not. Tasty? Definitely. Anyone who like honeybaked hams will love these things.

3. Because you sprinkle the sugar on afterwards, the toothpicks get a bit sticky. You could dredge the bacon in the sugar first, but you will likely not end up with enough sugar on the bacon that way. If you come up with something brilliant, please come back and share!

4. One of the reviewers on All Recipes called these "meat candy". They were totally right.

When I saw the picture I thought these are the same as the ones I make from time to time: Instead of the wiener I use dried dates, or dried aprictos (plums work as well).
